In recent years, there have been a number of design studios and illustrators who have, in addition to their day jobs, started designing and screen printing unique posters for bands. Some are commissioned by a band directly to produce a tour poster, while others are just creating them out of the good of their music-loving hearts.
If you have a chance, catch the documentary, Died Young, Stay Pretty. The film, directed by Eileen Yaghoobian, takes you inside the underground indie-rock poster scene in North America and discusses how the rock poster was reborn. Although still on a screening tour, it’s available on DVD through the film’s Web site.
The following are a selection of my favorite poster designers, all of whom sell their posters through their individual Web sites. The standard size is 18 x 24 and the average cost is $25. Put one in a frame and you’ve got yourself a nice piece of (affordable) art.
