A different drum | The birthday

One of Dale Carnegie’s six ways to make people like you is “make the other person feel important.”

Birthday wishes may not make you feel important, but they do make you feel special. And the office birthday, in whatever form it takes, shines its own distinct light. This is the only day that close and distant colleagues, figuratively and actually, can agree on your specialness. Their best wishes, typically shoehorned into a card too small for its own good, are always well-meaning and considerate. The real birthday gift you receive at work—where money, power and position can rule—is a reminder that small gestures can mean so much.

How do you celebrate your special day? Tell us in the comments.
