‘Gears of genius’
whereiwrite.org
In a world of freelancing and consulting, many of us have had to create our own work spaces—ones that inspire, motivate and get results. A freelancer’s office is not the structured environment of a big company office that has an established plan and routine. In that place, you know what to expect (and when to show up). For us, our creative locus can be wherever and whatever we want and need it to be.
I recently came across a photography project by Kyle Cassidy, Where I Write. He has photographed fantasy and science fiction writers in the places where they create their literary works. Cassidy talks about seeing the creative space of Michael Swanwick: “This I thought in stunned wonder as my eyes crept across the expanse of it, is a place of great significance and it needs to be seen. It was like I’d cracked open his skull and seen the gears of genius.”
After seeing Swanwick’s space, I realized that this is what I wanted, and was trying to achieve for my work space. I want to surround myself with creative energy and be connected to my surroundings. When you come into my home office, I want you to see my gears of genius.
Does the place you work show your gears of genius? Tell us in the comments.
