“What do you do for a living?”

For many of us that question is answered daily by what we wear at work. Work clothes signify many things: position, authority, tradition, etc. As the workplace has become more casual and comfortable, we still want our clothes to say something. But whether it’s Dickies or Dior, Hazmat suits or power suits, we can’t escape being identified with some group. As Frank Zappa said, “we all wear a uniform.”

Tell us about your dress code in the comments.

A Different Lens is an ongoing series and collaboration between Robin Wallace and Tom Devine that is inspired by images of working lives.
