NeverKnock: how to love ‘the middle’

NeverKnock is the result of two friends sharing a common value about the work we do.

For the lack of a better way of saying it, that value is “the middle.” By this we mean the place where connections are made. For the two of us, both creative professionals, it’s the intersection between concepts commonly thought of as opposites—creativity and commerce, professional and personal, and accomplishment and reward (among other things). For some, the notion of the middle means being ordinary and compromising. We, on the other hand, believe it’s a place where opposites join to create better and richer ideas, plans and experiences.

Our vision for this site is to motivate and inspire artists, designers and communicators to find ongoing career happiness. To do this, we want to discuss and share the middle where creating and careering come together. We believe we can find not only happiness, but also opportunity and meaning between these two ideas, often considered opposites.

NeverKnock will look at our collective working lives from a variety of perspectives. Our contributors will consider ideas, things and events common to our daily experience, and frame them in a middle place. Sometimes the discussions will be practical, and other times they will speak to our aspirations. We welcome both because we strongly believe we need each to achieve personal and professional growth.

To have a middle, you need two sides; and this site is about recognizing, accepting and bringing them together. It is also about another pairing: contributor and reader. You as our readers are crucial to our success, and we are committed to presenting ideas and information with which we hope you can “always make meaning.” We also hope that you will be active participants in the site, contributing comments and suggestions. Together, we can make NeverKnock a true middle place—a place where whatever is important and relevant to us can be shared, discussed and transformed.
